Description
One of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland, Fettercairn was opened in 1825 and after having many owners – including Sir John Gladstone, father of 4-time British Prime Minister William Gladstone – is currently at the heart of the Whyte & Mackay range. The malt produced is predominantly used in the blends produced by Whyte & Mackay but they also produce their own range of aged single malts.
Fior means pure or true in Gaelic, and this no-age-statement bottling launched in summer 2010 is something of a rebirth for the much-maligned Fettercairn distillery.
Gavin Smith, Malt Advocate: “Released with no age statement, Fettercairn Fior contains 15 percent heavily-peated whisky matured in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, along with a proportion of 14 and 15 year old spirit. The result is a bold and complex whisky with real nose presence; smoke, sherry, toffee, vanilla, and oranges merge on the nose, while the palate showcases more smoke and toffee, plus spices, oak, and licorice in the lengthy finish. 90.”
